BURNS & SCALDS

DEFINITIONS:
A burn is caused by dry heat, friction or chemicals.
A scald is caused by wet heat.

It is important that the person giving first-aid first protects themselves from gaining similar injuries, be aware of any spilages on which you may slip or gain burns yourself. With chemical burns wear gloves and if possible eye protection that will protect you, always be aware that the chemicals can give off gases which in some cases may be lethal.

WHAT SHOULD I DO ?

Remove source of heat, if an electrical burn turn off the mains power.

If it is a large or deep burn

IMMEDIATELY CALL FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE !

Protect your own skin and eyes and do not breathe in chemicals or gases.

Then cool the burn or scald as shown in the videos below before covering.

DO NOT DO ANY OF THIS !

Apply Butter.. In years gone by it was believed that applying Butter would cure burns, this 'Old Wive's Tale' did more damage than good as it heated up and continued to fry the skin.

Do not pop blisters, these form to act as protection against germs and infection.

Do not rip off any burnt clothing that is adhered to the skin.

LEARNING FIRST AID

Many of us are now taught First-Aid as a requirement for work, and it is law to have a qualified first-aider in any office, factory or workspace that has more than five persons.

But as parents we should learn first-aid in case something happens to our children at home, on way to and from school or at the park.

Basic and advanced courses are cheap and regularly run by both the St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross.  (see buttons below)

Everyone should learn basic first-aid, it could save a life !
